NELA – NEW LANGUAGE ACADEMY

Thank you for supporting and motivating your students daily. They stick to learning thanks to you.

OUR MISSION

We take people by the hand!

We want to help people who struggle learning a new language.

We are specialized in adult beginners and those who have tried to learn another language before but have not yet succeeded.

We are there for those who feel insecure and need help – not only by an app or a computer program, but by a real person who takes them by the hand. That is what differentiates us from all other school.

Our slogan:

Tell me and I forget.

Teach me and I remember.

Involve me and I learn

OUR LIVE-LESSONS OUTLINES

Use the outlines if you need ideas

Do you have your own better idea? Great! Use it and share it with us if you want.

Yet the following principles are important to follow:

  • Make sure to base your class on the material of the lesson. Do not spend the lesson just doing small talk! Always encourage the student to continue with the lesson, this will give him a sense of success.
  • Adapt the outlines to the student: Split up outlines for weaker students. Do the first part in one session and the second/third part in the next session.
  • Prepare well: Define beforehand which methods from the H.Cotton course you want to use during the lesson (max.2). Your student needs to see that you know exactly what you want to achieve during the class. This gives your student a feeling of achievement
  • Explain why the brain-friendly methods are so effective. Help your student to overcome shyness and get out of his comfort zone.
  • When doing small talk, use easy language and only a few sentences for beginners.
  • Permit the student to express himself often. Before explaining something, ask the student what he already knows about the subject. Then you will know what explanation to add and which misunderstandings to clarify.
  • Remember to smile and have a friendly facial expression
  • Always start and end on time.

OUR LEARNING STATIONS

The exercises for each lesson are divided into 3 learning stations:

STATION 1  – Focus: Comprehension - Aprox. 6-12 excercises with questions about the video/audio.

STATION 2 – Focus: Grammar – Aprox. 12-23 Are you able to use the information you just learned?
Tips and tricks

STATION #3 – Focus: Vocabulary, expressions and pronunciation

OUR TEACHING PACE

You are like a chief conductor of an orchestra. You encourage your students to keep the pace and the dynamic of going through the lessons.

If you lose motivation, your students will lose motivation. They depend on you to keep the pace.

NELA Basic

Finish a Lesson in 2 weeks

Finish a Level in 8 months

These students have a long-term goal.

The challenge: not to lose sight of their goal.

+ Help the student by making him aware of his progress and sticking to a good learning routine:

+ Encourage the student to book a live session once a week, to make this a habit.

+ Set a common goal on finishing a lesson within two weeks and explain to the student what he needs to do to reach the goal

+ Praise every station finished and every lesson finished. Remind him of how much better he is getting compared to when he started.

NELA Pro

Finish a Lesson in 1, 5 weeks

Finish a Level in 6 months

These students are eager.

The challenge: not to lose their eagerness and keep moving forward.

How?

+ Encourage the student to book two live lessons per week (double sessions are also possible).

+ Set a common goal of finishing a lesson in 1 and a half weeks and explain to the student how to reach this goal.

+ Help the student develop good learning habits and keeping up the pace and praise him a lot for every milestone he has reached.

NELA Power

Finish a Lesson in 1 week

Finish a Level in 4 months

These students want to advance quickly.

The challenge: they underestimate the effort that it takes and get discouraged.

What can you do to counteract discouragement and keep motivation high?

+ Set a common goal with the student to finish one lesson per week

+ Make a plan together with the student how to reach the goal:

+ Encourage him to book three live lessons per week (double sessions are also possible).

+ Help him develop good learning habits (when to do the exercises, when to take live-sessions).

+ Praise every milestone: every station, every lesson that is finished, praise the student and encourage him to keep the pace.

Here you can download the PDF. It will be updated again and again, because we learn a lot during operation. Please make sure you have the latest version. Thank you very much:

OUR GUIDELINES AND TIPS

Effective Chatting

  • Contact your students daily from Monday to Sunday (Unless the student wants it otherwise).
  • Select appropriate exercises, don’t do all of them.
  • Ideally get the student to do 4 exercises a day.
  • Show personal interest and customize messages according to the student’s interests.
  • Give well thought out feedback on exercises.
  • Praise enthusiastically.
  • Develop a friendly relationship by sending pictures (e.g. what you are cooking, of your pets, of the weather, of something beautiful you saw, etc.)

The Power of Voice Messages

  • They are close to real-life situations.
  • They help create a personal relationship by hearing your voice, especially when giving feedback.
  • They train the ear (comprehension skills).
  • They train communication and pronunciation skills.

Whenever you send voice messages remember to:

+ to speak clearly and in an easily understandable pace

+ to avoid background noise

+ to be very friendly and relaxed

Working with other Teachers

  • Please report any problems to the teacher support (Zelinda), either via WhatsApp or zelinda@nel.academy.

EFFECTIVE ZOOM SESSIONS

7 RULES

Rule #1: Start and end on time

Be punctual and structure your lesson so that you can finish on time. Always leave a few mintues for wrapping up the lesson and commending the student and explaining what will be done in the next days with the exercises.

Rule #2: Set a goal for the session

And explain to the student what will be covered during the lesson and how this will make him progress. A well-structured lesson is crucial for giving the student a sense of achievement and keeping him motivated.

Rule #3: Don’t talk too much

The student should talk more than the teacher. Ask the student what he already knows about the subject. Let him explain it and then you can add what was missing or clarify misunderstandings.

Rule #4: Stick to the subject of the lesson

Base your class on the content of the lesson. Use the pdf and the lesson outlines. It is best to use words and examples the student knows from the lesson. If you choose to use additional articles or videos, please make sure that the students can clearly see the connection to the lesson he’s in. Don’t use random material or subjects.

Rule #5: Use visual aids

Create visual aids to help the student feel good and give him the feeling that he can manage the situation. E.g. the student made a mistake, write down the sentence (e.g. sharing your screen or using the chatting function on zoom), show it to him and ask him if he can find the mistake.

Rule #6: Give appropriate feedback

Don’t correct every little detail. Always let the student finish before you correct him. Only correct important mistakes (one or max. 2 is generally enough).

Rule #7: Commend a lot!

Always be positive and motivating. Commend your student for every effort he’s making and make him see his progress.
